Health for the over 50s
5th November 2009
Poole, Dorset, 5th November 2009. Over 50s insurance brokers Castle Cover have created some health tips for the over 50s
We all know eating five a day and exercising regularly for 30 minutes a day is the best remedy for getting older and staying healthy. Castle Cover over 50’s insurance specialists has put together seven handy tips to keep their customers in good health. Take a peek:
Tip one: Eat five fruit and vegetables a day to improve your vitamin and mineral intake. Not only does this keep you physically healthy, but it makes you feel better mentally too!
Tip two: Exercise for at least 30 minutes a day. Even if you feel stiff or unenergetic, even a brisk walk can make a huge difference to the soul! And, any movement will count, so do something you enjoy. Popular exercise taken up by the over 50s market now includes swimming, dancing and gardening. The secret is to just keep moving and you’ll soon feel like a spring chicken again.
Tip three: Just because you are getting older, doesn’t mean you should give things up! Socialise, learn, playing games, solve puzzles and do the cross words in the papers. It’s important to keep your brain active, not just to keep you ticking. Give yourself some academic stimulation to make yourself feel content. Exercising your brain is as important if not more important as you get older.
Tip four: We all have our guilty pleasures, but try to drink alcohol moderately as drinking too much can raise blood pressure and put older people at a higher risk. Similarly, don’t indulge too much in those naughties at pudding time. Just because our bodies are slowing down, doesn’t mean we should fill it with rubbish!
Tip five: If you worry, go to the doctor and have regular health checks to keep you consciously aware of high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Besides anything, it’ll give you great peace of mind, and if you do find some abnormalities, you can fix them.
Tip six: If you need further support, don’t suffer in silence. Contact NHS Direct for confidential advice and information on all your health matters. You’ve paid your taxes, so have something back for a change.
Tip seven: One of the highest risk factors to health is smoking, so if you are a smoker, why not try to cut down a bit? You can even go to your doctor for free support if you are having trouble quitting. And there are loads of over 50s help groups to keep you motivated and help you meet other people trying to give up.
